We live in times when finding a personal center and the ability to experience life with a sense of joy and flourishing is important and challenging. Many people are looking to find the balance between a sense of competence and well-being in their daily lives. – Bob Noha
The body should be triangular, the mind circular. The triangle represents the generation of energy and is the most stable physical posture. The circle symbolizes serenity and perfection, the source of unlimited techniques. The square stands for solidity, the basis of applied control.

Professor Cheng delivered lectures in New York City on two key Confucian texts, the Daxue (Great Learning) and The Doctrine of the Mean (Chongyong), and on Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. He also published a book on the Confucian texts, New Explanation of the Study of the [Doctrine of the] Mean (學 庸 新 解 xue yong xin jie). The first of his lectures in 1971 in New York was on the Daxue. This short but key text, one of the 'four books' of Confucianism, is a good point to begin our study of Professor Cheng's lectures.
The first meeting will begin with a brief introduction by Barbara Davis on the social and historical position of the Daxue.![]()
We then plan to watch the short introduction that Professor Cheng gave to the lecture series.![]()
Daniel Altschuler will then help orient us in Professor Cheng's book and learn how a Chinese classical text is laid out and how to distinguish between primary text and commentary. He will then demonstrate translating using available online dictionaries and working with the first two sentences of the Daxue.![]()
After this we will look at Natasha Gorky Young's notes from the lecture on these two first sentences.![]()
A pdf of Professor Cheng's book can be found here (many thanks to Choon Lui Ong):![]()

Following Meetings
In April we will continue translating the following two sentences of the Daxue and watch Professor Cheng lecturing on these two sentences and read through notes from students who were there.![]()
And in May we will discuss Professor Cheng's commentary, alternate translations of the Daxue and our interpretations.
We expect the study group to proceed in this way slowly through the text.![]()
It will be a work-in-progress figuring out how to conduct the group effectively. There will be many different levels of experience and familiarity with the texts, ideas, and knowledge of Chinese, so please be patient and send us any suggestions you might have.
