He also published a book on the Confucian texts, New Explanation of the Study of the [Doctrine of the] Mean (學庸新解 xue yong xin jie). The first of his lectures in 1971 in New York was on the Daxue. This short but key text, one of the 'four books' of Confucianism, is a good point to begin our study of Professor Cheng's lectures. The first meeting will begin with a brief introduction by Barbara Davis on the social and historical position of the Daxue.We then plan to watch the short introduction that Professor Cheng gave to the lecture series.Daniel Altschuler will then help orient us in Professor Cheng's book and learn how a Chinese classical text is laid out and how to distinguish between primary text and commentary.
